How Many Days from LA to New York?
Count on 7-10 days under normal conditions. This isn't overnight shipping. Your car shares a trailer with 6-10 other vehicles, and the driver has to follow DOT rules about rest periods and driving hour limits the entire way.
Straight driving time from LA to NYC is about 40-45 hours, but that's not how it works in practice. Carriers stop in places like Flagstaff, Amarillo, Little Rock, and Knoxville to rest, refuel, and sometimes load or drop off other vehicles. Winter ice storms through Arkansas and Tennessee are the most common source of delays on this corridor.
If you're in a hurry, we offer expedited service that trims transit to 5-7 days, but that costs 40-60% more than standard. Most people don't need it. Our internal numbers show 89% of LA-to-NYC shipments land inside the quoted delivery window. Booking early makes a difference, especially between March and October when demand is highest.
Which Highway Route Do Carriers Take?
The southern route is what most drivers pick: I-10 east out of LA, connecting to I-40 through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and the mid-South, then jumping onto I-81 north through Virginia toward the Northeast. This path stays below the snow belt and has reliable fuel stops every 300-400 miles. Typical stops include Barstow, Flagstaff, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, and Knoxville.
There's also the I-80 northern route through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. It's about 150 miles shorter on paper, but mountain grades and unpredictable weather slow things down. We only suggest I-80 during the summer months when Donner Pass and the Rockies are fully clear.
You'll rarely see a driver take the I-70 middle route through Kansas and Missouri for this run. Kansas has tight weight limits that hassle big carriers, Missouri's hills burn through fuel, and you still hit major congestion around St. Louis and Indianapolis. It's just not efficient for this destination.
Open vs Enclosed: What's Right for LA to NYC?
About 85% of our LA to New York customers go with open carrier transport. Your car rides on a standard hauler exposed to the elements, backed by the carrier's $250,000 insurance policy. Open runs $950-$1,500 depending on what you're shipping and when. For daily drivers, used cars, and newer vehicles you actually put miles on, it works perfectly.
Enclosed auto transport is the call for luxury cars, classics, and anything valued above $75,000. A covered trailer blocks road debris, rain, and UV exposure for the full 2,790 miles. Budget $1,650-$3,500 for enclosed on this route. Fair warning: lead times run a bit longer since fewer enclosed carriers operate and they haul smaller loads.
Something worth knowing: the actual weather risk on this route is lower than you'd expect. Most of the trip crosses desert and open plains where it rarely rains. The biggest exposure is road grit kicked up by passing trucks, and experienced drivers know how to maintain safe following distances to keep that to a minimum.
When Do LA to NYC Rates Go Up and Down?
The most expensive stretch runs August through October. That's when college students flood the route shipping cars to East Coast campuses, and early snowbirds start moving south. We've watched quotes climb 25-40% during peak September weeks. If your move falls in those months, book as far ahead as you can. January and February give you the lowest rates, but winter storms become a timing factor.
Going the other direction, New York to LA, usually runs $100-$200 cheaper. Carriers would rather grab a westbound load than deadhead back empty. If your schedule's flexible and you can ship during a slow period, you might catch a return-load discount that saves real money.
Corporate relocations keep demand steady on this route all year long. We move cars for a lot of entertainment industry folks, actors, producers, and studio executives going both ways between LA and NYC. Those clients almost always want door-to-door delivery and they'll pay premium to lock in guaranteed pickup dates.
Where We Pick Up in LA and Drop Off in New York
On the LA side, we pick up all over the metro area: downtown, Beverly Hills, the San Fernando Valley, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Long Beach, and out into the Inland Empire. Carriers need room for a 75-foot truck, so if you're on a narrow street in the Hills or a tight condo complex, we'll arrange a meeting point at a shopping center or main road nearby.
New York deliveries are a different animal. Manhattan below 96th Street is nearly impossible for full-size car carriers, so most deliveries go to staging lots in Queens, the Bronx, or northern New Jersey. Long Island, Westchester, and Connecticut are no problem. Brooklyn and Staten Island work well for standard-size haulers too.
If you want to save $150-$250, terminal-to-terminal is an option. We use a partner facility near downtown LA for drop-off and locations in Newark or Queens for NYC pickup. You just need your own ride to and from the terminal. For most people though, door-to-door service is worth the extra cost to avoid the hassle.

Amarillo, TX is the unofficial midpoint of this route. That's where most drivers take their longest rest stop, check tie-down straps, and reposition vehicles on the trailer for the eastern half of the drive. If any issue with your shipment is going to come up, it usually shows itself here. Ask your driver about the Amarillo check when you talk to them.
